I’m inspired by the calendar girls of the ’80s, fashion ads of the ‘90s, and the editorial essence of the infamous Pirelli Calendar.

I can look back on this inspiration and see why it illuminated my soul: The models of the ‘80s served ZERO shame. The women in these ads and posters were proud to show themselves off.

Fast forward to the Calvin Klein ads of the ‘90s: these images showcased people that weren’t stereotypically beautiful in comparison to what we were shown in the ‘80s (and older). The ads focused on the imperfections and beauty of individualism. It made the viewer feel like an old t-shirt and pair of jeans can be sexier than the over-done negligee.

It opened our minds to question what is sexy?

For me, the Pirelli Calendar took ‘80s stereotypical beauty, ‘90s-grunge sex appeal and mixed it with high-fashion editorial to create a hybrid of iconic imagery. It’s through the calendar that I was able to discover the true grit of sex appeal by exploring the photographers that contributed to the Pirelli Calendar: Helmut Newton, Mert & Marcu, and others alike.
